That WAS pretty great. The right of late has let out an outcry that we are losing the real America, but what they are failing to realize is, as Langston Hughes so eloquently put it... I, Too Sing America.
I as a black woman define American culture, just like the white gay man, just like the muslim boy, finally after centuries of pushing, minority voices are being heard, "if ever so softly". We need to collectively re-define what it means to be American. We need to resurrect the big themes of Love and Freedom and Justice and realize that up until now we have not lived in a nation, Of the people, For the people and By the people...but we can. I Hope.

I recently read Censoring An Iranian Love Story by Shahriar Mandanipour. Just amazing, a novel that gives immense insight into the socio-political climate of Iran and how the people there fight the system in small, subtle ways and, in the end, people just struggle to live and love and triumph under an oppressive regime.

Beautiful. Inspiring. Humanizing. I am still amazed that eight years after 9/11, Muslims are demonized daily in the news, in our communities, everywhere. Kudos for those who took the time to open their hearts to show the world that despite our social/political/cultural differences, we all bleed red.
