Is justice colorblind? Or does it treat those who are attractive, favorably? You be the judge.
ABC News’ segment What Would you Do? featured a story where they staged a black and white male actor and a white female actress of the same age and dress in a scenario where they appear to be stealing a bike from a public place in plain sight. What do you think happened? Would you have stopped them?
Why or why not?

This was quite odd, but not surprising, but at the same time it was! She’s telling them she’s stealing the bike, and they still helped her. The point is they would give her the benefit of the doubt before a black male committing the same act.
Beauty and color definitely played a part in each person’s reaction. They didn’t question whether or not it was hers and when she actually told them what she was doing, they still couldn’t believe what she was doing.
The men just made themselves look like asses. Lol. So, I guess in society, beauty, sex and color most definitely do matter!
I would have said something, or called for help. I still think about personal safety also. If it didn’t look like I’d be harmed in my intervention, then I’d say something.
I’m kind of angry the women said “young white men usually don’t carry burglar tools”. lol Just shows not much has changed.
Ok.. I commented before I finished watching this..
They totally confront the black kid IMMEDIATELY!! What the heck! But they didn’t budge for the white woman/male. This saddens me. They weren’t so bold with the other people. Look at the anger from the people towards this black kid.. where was all that anger, suspicion and intervention with the other actors?
Justice is blind when it wants to be.
Um, duh, of course the men tripped all over themselves to help the hot blonde. I think it has something to do with the shunting of blood? Shoot, I probably would have helped her steal the bike.:)
We all have beauty bias…I have to fight it in myself at work, I find that I instantly want to take care of the young women who are young and thin and cute, but a woman the same age who comes into the ER who is less attractive and overweight, to be quite frank, I have to fake it. Not just me,I see the different treatment everyday from the other nurses and md’s. It’s visceral. We are beautifully human, but tragically flawed.
I love how the story about the young black teen ended on a hopeful note.
Hatred and bias has been with us since the dawn of time and will be with us until the end of time, but just seeing that older white man so casually and easily ask him if he had lost his key and then help him retrieve his bike and stroll off saying “good luck” …well for all the hatred in the world it lets me know there is goodness, decency and God’s Love at work in the world too.
