Solomon Burke was an American Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter who claimed to be the man for whom the term “soul music” was coined. He died three days ago at Schiphol Airport, outside Amsterdam, on his way to a concert performance.

marks you leave behind
My sons and I have this game that we play at home where someone will start a drawing on the hallway dry erase board. Then it is up to the two that remain to change the meaning (and innocence) of the initial scribble.
happy birthday, spencer christian bivins
It is with much pride and adulation that I inform you that today, October 4, Spencer Christian Bivins,
my multi-talented and youngest of two sons, turns 12.
reach to write like your melody
October 1, 2010 is a milestone day for me. While my debut novel, PIOUS, has enjoyed some advance success for a couple of weeks online, the official release date is today.
released
Things have been incredibly busy on my end so I’m a little late in reporting it to you here but… (drumroll)… PIOUS, my first novel, has been released!!
12:34 and the order of things
It’s 12:34, again. Lately, I’ve noticed that when I’m cognizant of the time, it’s 12:34 — AM or PM. One two three four. Maybe it means something, or maybe I should be occupying my thoughts with more significant and important things. But then perhaps, I’m being made aware of the proper order of things. Lately, my patience has been sprinting past me.
PIOUS has finally started seeing the light of day as buzz is proliferating across the internet and it’s appearing at many online stores for pre-order. Amazon released it as “available” for 48 hours last week and a few people got an order in before the link returned to “pre-order” status. The official release date is October 1.
As I got boxes of my own copies last week, I couldn’t help but think of how significant these boxes were to the order of things. My publisher, Two Harbors Press, started editing PIOUS back in February and it seems like it’s taken forever to bring it to market to share with you. There’s been two postponed release dates and three canceled festival appearances. Along the way, friends and supporters have encouraged me to be patient and trust that God’s plan is better than my own. I can’t say that I’ve come along quietly but I’m on board now. I’m not sure of where this ride will take me but my excitement has officially begun. Care to join me?
