courage has no color

Red Tails, in theaters January 20th, depicts the challenges and heroism of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II and is produced by George Lucas, the legendary creator of Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

George Lucas has been very open in discussing his own challenges in getting this movie produced because of Hollywood’s aversion to “black” movies. He said that he couldn’t find many that would invest the marketing dollars.

Investors said that they just didn’t know how well an “all black action movie” would play to the movie going audience. As a result, Lucas, Oprah and Tyler Perry put up $35 million of the $100 million just to get it to the theaters.

This weekend, let’s prove Hollywood wrong. Let’s show them with our dollars that we want to see movies like Red Tails that show the accurate history and determination of “real” American Heroes. Let’s show Hollywood that a movie doesn’t have to have a white lead in order to be successful with a major studio. Let’s fill the theaters the weekend of January 20th.

I had no idea that Oprah and T.P. were also involved. I wondered why people like them didn’t back more movies like this, but apparently, the do. Impressive.

Hollywood sees green. If this movie succeeds there will be more like it…they only care about their bottom line. :/

Lucas’s words from a Jon Stewart interview were “the movie wasn’t green enough for Hollywood.” Go here and scroll to the bottom of the page for a nice interview where he talks about the film on The Daily Show.
